WE HAVE NEW LAMBS!

Spring has arrived at Piñon Wood Ranch! Well, maybe the weather doesn't think so - we still have snow on the ground and another winter storm is due in this week. But the calendar says it is Spring, and more importantly the sheep think so too. Twins Panda and Geoffrey were born March 10th in a snow storm. Twins Caesar and Juliet were born March 15th, the Ides of March (and it was snowing that day too!) And finally Romeo was born on March 31st. Check out their pictures below.

NEW UK BLOODLINES

Piñon Wood Ranch is proud to announce the addition of three new UK bloodlines to our breeding program.
At the end of February we made a trip to Oregon to pick up 4 new registered Shetland ewes that had been artificially inseminated by Martin Dally of Super Sire, Ltd. in Lebanon, Oregon. We chose 3 champion rams from Scotland (see pictures and bios below) to have our new girls bred to. Their lambs are due the end of April or early May (see The Scots Have Arrived! above.) We won't be selling any of these lambs this year as we want to keep them to establish the new bloodlines, but we hope to have their lambs for sale Spring of 2012 and will offer stud service this Fall (2010) to any rams we get.

Drum Ram

Drum Ram

SSBG Reg. No. 031903 (SR) United Kingdom
Sire: Drum Valhalla SSBG Reg No. 014310 (SR)
Dam: Drum Ewe SSBG Reg No. 025476

Known as "Black", this is an outstanding ram that at the age of five is still jet black and has not developed any white fibers. He has been a consistent show winner, and is still being shown actively. His fleece is very fine and crimpy, and is unusually lustrous. This ram has been bred extensively and has been proven to pass on his color and fleece characteristics to his progeny. He also has excellent carcass conformation and very correct Shetland breed characteristics. Bred and owned by Rena Douglas of Craigrothie, Scotland.

Island Kurkigarth Brent

Island Kurkigarth Brent

SSBG Reg No. 033804 (SR) United Kingdom
Sire: N/A
Dam: N/A

This dark moorit ram was the Champion Moorit Ram and the 2000 Shetland Flock Book Show and sale, and was the highest selling moorit ram that year. His fleece has a good dark color, is fine and crimpy, and in extensive breeding he has been proven to pass this color and quality to his offspring. He also carries katmoget genetics, and has sired some excellent katmoget lambs. The ram has good size and structure, and a very easygoing temperament. Bred by Dean Gilfillan of Shetland, and now owned by Rena Douglas of Craigrothie, Scotland.

Island Skeld

Island Skeld

SSBG Reg No. 033805 (SR) United Kingdom
Sire: N/A
Dam: N/A

At the 2000 Shetland Flock Book Show and Sale, Island Skeld was the highest selling ram out of approximately 300 rams sold. This is a truly exceptional Shetland ram in every way. His fleece is very, very fine, soft, crimpy, and consistent from front to back, top to bottom. His carcass conformation and Shetland breed characteristics are flawless. Skeld has been bred extensively to ewes from several flocks, and has been proven to pass his exceptional quality on his progeny. An added bonus to breeding with Skeld is that he is an ARR/ARR genotype, the highest resistance to Scrapie. Bred by Brian Ridland of Shetland, one of the top ram breeders in the islands, and now co-owned by Rena Douglas of Craigrothie, Scotland, and Jim Chastain of Hillsboro, Oregon.

Island Skeld carries Scrapie Resistant genetics (SR).
