The 2010 Colorado State Fair honored us with two high level winners among our many, many ribbons.

Butch Cassidy won Grand Champion Ram. That's the Purple Grand Champion Blanket and it's Purple & White Rosette Ribbon. The large Purple and Gold Rosette is the "Premier Exhibitor" ribbon won by Piñon Wood Ranch for winning the most points at the show.

Shane Has Help!

Angus McTavish

Shane, our wonderful Anatolian Livestock Guard Dog, will be 9 years old this year and is starting to show his age. We have been looking for a younger dog for Shane to mentor and train before we have to retire him. Last week we heard about a litter of Akbash puppies that sounded like just the ticket. Akbash is an ancient breed of Livestock Guard Dog that originated in Turkey. The bloodlines cross with the Anatolian breed. They are bred for their instinct to guard livestock and patrol borders.

There were nine puppies in the litter but this one chose us.

Tavish Chewing Toes

We named him Angus McTavish (Tavish for short) and brought him home. Tavish lives in the barn with the sheep and Alpacas, and Shane oversees his education. He is very smart and learning fast, but still needs to be a puppy some of the time.

Tavish Playing

He likes to end his day cuddling with his people.
